The Wendover Hoard

Wendover is a picturesque village in Buckinghamshire and often described as the gateway to the Chiltern Hills. I know it well. My wife and I were married at St Mary’s parish church, our children attended the local primary school and I taught at the secondary school for nearly 40 years. Members of our family lie at rest in the churchyard. This setting is where my story takes place.

Coincidences never cease to amaze. I often take a look at old detecting magazines, devouring each page and being constantly sidetracked by exciting and interesting articles. They also provide an ideal and very welcome displacement activity. Long-suffering Mrs John will tell you that I should have been doing something else more useful and productive like fixing the lights under the worktop, cutting the grass or just doing the washing-up. My attention had been diverted in a most pleasant way.

Never did I think that as the son of a coal miner growing up in a County Durham pit village in the 40s and 50s, the experience and local knowledge gained would help a fellow detectorist over 60 years later.
