No Escaping Christmas!

14th December 2014 — 21 Comments

I understand that no matter how hard I try, Christmas isn’t going to go away. I’ve decided to embrace it this year by not being a self-centred misery guts full of false bonhomie. Here’s the Christmas card I’ll be sending to all my friends this year. That’s a good start, don’t you think?

Santa

I love dressing-up!

That classic line Bah Humbug, from the mouth of Ebenezer Scrooge, is a perfect example of the the miserly ways of some modern-day wrinklies. But not me … not this year anyway!  🙂

I’m sure that you’ll understand why I can come over all curmudgeonly at this time of the year. Things can become rather hectic and I tend to get just a little short tempered. In reality, I am so excited about Christmas. I love it … but roll on the 26th when I can catch up on my sleep and have a short rest!

It’s taken me some time to realise that the worst thing you can do is let anyone know that you dislike Christmas. I told you that three years ago and was ostracised and treated like some kind of freak. People also assumed that I was tight-fisted miserable old git and anti-fun. As a result of these entirely unfounded assumptions (short, muffled chortle) all it did was make it even harder to escape the festive season and learn to hate it even more!

Bring on the mince pies and as much turkey as I can eat. I love it! Ho, ho, ho!  🙂

This has been a public announcement on behalf of the Winter Solstice Party (technically, the Depths of Winter). What better time to crack open a bottle or two (or three) of Pinot, investigate the sloe gin and sample the Scotch that has been maturing in the kitchen cupboard for the last ten years?

After all, I have made it through the shortest day. Every day afterwards is a little longer, brighter and closer to those long, warm summer evenings that we miss so much at this time of the year. Let’s go metal detecting!

GIVE IN – after all, it’s only once a year …

The season of goodwill. Happy Christmas to all my followers, friends and others. I wish you successful digging next year!

  1. For some reason… Santa looks vaguely familiar! As for me, I am skipping Christmas but you can still bring on the eggnog! I wish you and yours a Happy Winter Solstice!

  2. So does that mean our curmudgeon club is dissolving?

Have a good Winter Solstices my friend! Cathy and I will be thinking of you.

    • We should always remember how exciting Christmas is through the eyes of children. Think also of the lonely and people without the luxuries we take for granted.

      Merry Christmas one and all.

  5. Well I am spending Christmas on my own and looking forward to it …. Merry Christmas & Happy New Year John and Lynda. x

  6. OK I won’t tell how much I dislike Christmas John.
It’s the season when we see the best and worst of our fellow man.

  7. It would look even better with a Tenner inside lol. Happy Christmas and have a great new year my old friend

  8. Thank you Guys … and my female fan club cheerleaders, Fay and Anne.

You have mail coming Mr. Humbug! Seasons greetings.

  10. No warm summer evenings here in Oz. Christmas day is just as likely to be 43c (110 f.) but the little Aussie kids will be still happy to open their gifts. We have a terrorism type thing happening in Sydney at the moment. I see the PM chose to speak with a christmas tree behind him. I guess a symbol of the christian beliefs of most Australians.

  11. There are many Christmases’ and I love one of them; just not the one where the nation dances to the tune of big business puppeteers! Why is it that we give so much to so many that already have enough; whilst millions go without.

May you and all yours have a blessed Christmas this year and if you decide to donate the cost of your Christmas present to a good cause, don’t tell the wife; it will cause chaos!

At least we can all wish you “Happy New Year”

  12. And there I was thinking the picture was the real deal! Where is that drink? I need to rebuild my deflated expectations.
Merry Xmas to you John and Lynda

  13. This festive event has become ever more commercial. The oddments I used to get when I was a kid has been gradually superseded by demands from children to get the latest upgrade in technology and thereby placing another burden on parents to supply.
I guess the message behind the season of peace and goodwill is fine, but it rarely attains the status.A season of overeating and drinking, watching the same programmes that you have seen a hundred times before and of course the obligatory family disputes.
    Yo Ho Ho!
A Christmas cracker joke! What type of pizza does Santa Claus prefer? Answer: Deep pan, crisp and even! “Oh, I wish it could be Christmas everyday!” May 2015 hopefully prove to be a good year for all!

  14. Thank you all for the interesting and thought-provoking comments … seasonal greetings to you all!

  15. Merry Christmas John! He would like you to think he is a Scrooge, but he gave me an early Christmas present. A couple of issues of “The Searcher” earlier this year. Thanks John!
